Stan Lee and the Rise and Fall of the American Comic
Book was assembled through a unique research process.
Unlike most unauthorized biographies, we were able to
draw on a number of interviews with Lee himself,
conducted both for the book and for an earlier Los Angeles Times
Magazine
profile by co-author Jordan Raphael. In addition, we conducted
interviews with many of Lee's friends, relatives and former associates,
as well as experts in comics history and criticism.
We also drew on the boxes and boxes of papers on file in the
Stan Lee Archives, housed in a facility at the University of Wyoming. The archives contained personal
papers, in-house Marvel
communications, and numerous examples of Stan Lee's writing that
have yet to see the light of day.
In the weeks leading up to the September publication of the book, we will showcase
various documents from our research process, along with notes on how we found them and how we used them.
A new document will be posted every Thursday, so check back often.
