Dear Jack...
A courtesy letter from Stan
Lee to Jack Kirby thanking him for a meeting at Kirby's Thousand Oaks,
California, home in the mid-1970s. The Lee-Kirby relationship is
fascinating on many levels; the two men who worked so well together
were completely different in temperament and personality. In 1977, they
still had one more project to come, which Lee refers to here -- the
book-length Silver Surfer story that was one of the mainstream American
comic-book industry's first forays into what has since become known as
the Graphic Novel.
Kirby would later claim to
have always understood Lee. If nothing else, that understanding allowed
them to work together in a cordial fashion for a much longer time than
many in retrospect might have imagined. After The Silver Surfer graphic novel -- which, incidentally, came nowhere close to achieving the sales levels of All The President's Men -- there would be mainly anger and bitterness between the two men.
Stan Lee's relationship with Jack Kirby is discussed throughout the book.
