Stan and Joan Lee Robbed!

Stan Lee struck up a friendship with the seminal French New Wave film figure Alain Resnais in the late 1960s after being contacted by the director while he was visiting New York. Resnais greatly admired the new Marvel superhero comics, and wanted to work with the creative force behind their uniquely American energy and liberal outlook -- a creative force he believed to be their writer, Stan Lee. Resnais and Lee worked together on a few projects -- one, The Monster Maker, made it into full script form. But none of the pair's film efforts were ever filmed. Lee would later provide a voice-over in a Resnais film, while Resnais made a cameo appearance at Stan Lee's 1972 Carnegie Hall show.

The Lees were friendly with Resnais and his wife, and thus Lee's correspondence with the director was often charmingly direct and revealing. In this letter, Lee outlines some of his thoughts about moving to Los Angeles, including some negative feelings about New York -- his former home base -- in reference to a recent robbery.

Stan Lee's time in Hollywood and his friendship with Alain Resnais are discussed in Chapter 17.
